Convergent designs for electrogenesis

چکیده

Newand old-world tropical electric fish lack a common electrical ancestor, suggesting that the mechanisms of signal generation and recognition evolved independently in the two groups. Recent research on convergent designs for electrogenesis and electroreception has focused on the structure of electric organs, the neural circuitry controlling the pacemaker driving the electric organ, and the neural circuitry underlying time coding of electric waveforms.

Convergent and sequential synthesis designs: implications for conducting and reporting systematic reviews of qualitative and quantitative evidence

BACKGROUND Systematic reviews of qualitative and quantitative evidence can provide a rich understanding of complex phenomena. This type of review is increasingly popular, has been used to provide a landscape of existing knowledge, and addresses the types of questions not usually covered in reviews relying solely on either quantitative or qualitative evidence. Although several typologies of synt...

Layer-specific high-frequency action potential spiking in the prefrontal cortex of awake rats

Cortical pyramidal neurons show irregular in vivo action potential (AP) spiking with high-frequency bursts occurring on sparse background activity. Somatic APs can backpropagate from soma into basal and apical dendrites and locally generate dendritic calcium spikes. The critical AP frequency for generation of such dendritic calcium spikes can be very different depending on cell type or brain ar...

Analysis of Spike Electrogenesis and Depolarizing K Inactivation in Electroplaques of Electrophorus electricus, L

Voltage clamp analyses, combined with pharmacological tools demonstrate the independence of reactive Na and K channels in electrically excitable membrane of eel electroplaques. Spike electrogenesis is due to Na activation and is eliminated by tetrodotoxin or mussel poison, or by substituting choline, K, Cs, or Rb for Na in the medium. The K channels remain reactive, but K activation is always a...

Analysis of Spike Electrogenesis of Eel Electroplaques with Phase Plane and Impedance Measurements

Eel electroplaques provide experimental conditions in which registration of phase plane trajectories (dV/dt vs. V) and impedance measurements with an AC Wheatstone bridge, in conjunction with spike electrogenesis describe quantitatively the ionic processes of the electrogenesis. Thus, these data employing as they do measurements of transients, permit an independent test of the validity of the a...

The Action of Tetrodotoxin on Electrogenic Components of Squid Giant Axons

Voltage clamp measurements on squid giant axons show that externally applied puffer fish poison, tetrodotoxin, eliminates only the initial inward current component of spike electrogenesis and does not affect the subsequent outward current. The selective effect on Na activation, which is reversible, confirms the view that the movements of Na and K during spike electrogenesis occur at structurall...
